Mapungubwe National Park lies in Limpopo province at the meeting point of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, where South Africa borders Botswana and Zimbabwe. Its landscape combines open savanna, sandstone cliffs, baobab trees, riverine woodland, and rocky hills. The park forms part of the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its archaeological and cultural importance. It protects a large section of the Limpopo Valley while preserving the remains of an ancient African kingdom, making the area significant for both wildlife conservation and the study of southern African history.

Mapungubwe was the centre of a powerful indigenous kingdom whose wealth was linked to agriculture, livestock, metalworking, and long-distance trade through the Indian Ocean network. Archaeological evidence includes pottery, glass beads, ivory objects, stone structures, and the famous gold rhinoceros discovered in a royal burial. Mapungubwe Hill contains remains that reveal a society in which a ruling elite lived separately from communities on the plains below. The cultural landscape also preserves evidence of earlier hunter-gatherers and farming communities, providing insight into changing relationships between people, resources, trade, and the surrounding environment.

Mapungubwe National Park contains a varied landscape shaped by the Limpopo and Shashe river systems. Mapungubwe Hill, K2, Leokwe Hills, and the Treetop Walk are among the notable places to explore, while viewpoints provide broad views across the park and toward the neighbouring countries. Wildlife includes elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impala, and other antelope. The park also supports numerous bird species and reptiles, while fossil discoveries include dinosaur footprints and other remains. Game drives, archaeological tours, hiking, and birdwatching are among the principal activities.

The park’s dry Lowveld environment supports vegetation such as mopane woodland, baobabs, acacias, and other drought-adapted plants. Seasonal changes influence wildlife movements and the appearance of the river valleys, while the Limpopo provides an important water source and wildlife corridor. Food associated with the wider Limpopo region includes maize-based dishes, traditional vegetable preparations, meat stews, and locally grown fruit. One distinctive feature of Mapungubwe is its position within a transboundary landscape: wildlife and ecological systems extend across South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, while the archaeological evidence demonstrates that earlier communities also interacted across the same broad region.
